Donald Trump wants to make America great again. This is how he wants to do it:
If Trump were elected president, he says, he would launch the U.S. government into a massive building project — and a massive manhunt — both at once.
On the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump would build a long, impenetrablewall. In the rest of the country, he would pressure the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants to “self-deport” — and, if they don’t, round them up to deport en masse. Later, Trump says, “the good ones” could come back.
My advice to Donald Trump is to be yourself at whatever upcoming debate. Do not play by their rules. Convert their venue into your venue. Convert the debate into the Donald Trump Show.
As I’ve said, which explains Bernie Sanders’ success thus far, is that Americans have been fed such a steady diet of establishment retreads that they can recognize the real deal when they see it. They gravitate toward it and they embrace it.
And you don’t even have to have detailed plans for this or that, all of which are complete BS anyway as politicians do what they want when they’re in office. “You can keep your doctor.”
If I were on stage, I’d say, “Look. This country has got some major problems. America is not Number One. We are no longer free. This country has gone off the rails. How do we fix that? I don’t precisely know. But admitting that we have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery, as they say. And this country needs to go to rehab.”
And those words alone will break the spell that the electorate has labored under for decades. And you’ll have the audience in the palm of your hand.
Do not follow their rules. If you play by their rules, you will lose.
I might, however, gently caution to tone down the ad hominem attacks. Yes, everyone likes a good street fight, but it’s time to move on to bigger matters. Ignore the other contenders. The prize is yours if you want it. Conduct yourself accordingly.
One more thing: Do not follow their rules.
